Some of the things we do are as follows:
This is generally in Term 1 in order for pupils to get to know each other. It gives pupils a chance to learn or recap Outdoor Education safety rules before venturing offsite. The activities can include slack-lining, gardening, team building, orienteering and community projects.
Immersed in nature, pupils have the opportunity to get wet and muddy. We build dens, climb trees, go puddle jumping and stream walking. Whatever the weather we wear our wellies and always have fun!
Pupils experience different woodland environments and learn basic survival skills, relating to fire, shelter, water, food and emergency proceedures. They further develop the den building skills learnt in KS3 using tarpaulins.
At Redpoint pupils learn to traverse, boulder, belay and top rope. Whatever their ability or confidence all pupils are encouraged to push their comfort zones. It is also a brilliant activity to develop team work, trust and communication.
Either at the Bristol Family Cycle Centre or using Access sport venues pupils have the chance to:
• ride a variety of adapted bicycles
• learn to ride a bicycle
• develop riding skills to complete a BMX pump track
Basically treasure hunting! By utilising courses around Bristol pupils must work together to gather as many control or caches in a given time. They develop map reading skills and learn how to use a GPS for navigation.
In the final summer term pupils cool off at Clevedon Marine Lake where initially they learn paddle skills in a stable rafted canoe. They then have the option of progressing to solo more unstable canoes, kayaks and stand up paddle boards testing their balance, co-ordination and resilience. Many pupils enjoy learning to capsize, all enjoy splashing and having fun in the sun!
